Great
Island Ensemble
Hear Allegheny Sounds featuring the Great Island Ensemble
The
Great Island Ensemble was formed by Dr. Sue Malin and her husband, Dennis, over
a decade ago, and has evolved through the years to include various different musicians.
The current line-up includes Sue Malin on flute, Dennis Malin on
bass clarinet, Ona Ruth Weimer on keyboard, Doug Ladika on clarinet
and Charis Bean Duke on oboe. The group plays a varied repertoire of Renaissance
and Baroque music.
After
graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science
in Music Education, Dr. Malin continued to be involved with music in a variety
of ways. Following voice studies in the School of Music at Michigan State University
where she received her performance degree, Masters of Music and studied flute
with principal flutist of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Malin went
on to perform with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, Choir and Symphonic Band.
Presently,
she is in charge of graduate programs and is professor of music in the Lock Haven
University Music Department. She is also Assistant to the Dean of the College
of Arts and Science and the College of Education and Human Services. She is an
active performer on flute and voice in the central Pennsylvania region. Professor
Malin has taught for 29 years and, in addition to her new administrative duties
at Lock Haven University, still teaches a variety of music courses and teaches
flute. Dennis
Malin has a degree in theater from Penn State University and years ago was a director
of theater in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he wrote music for children. He is
currently retired and spends his time locating and transcribing music for the
ensemble to perform. A
long-time member of the Great Island Ensemble, keyboardist Ona Ruth Weimer is
an active piano accompanist, performing in a variety of concerts in the Lock Haven
region. Doug Ladika, the clarinetist in the group, is not a professional musician,
but relishes the opportunity to perform such a varied and exciting repertoire
of live music with the Ensemble. He teaches graduate students in the Physician
Assistant program at Lock Haven University. Charis Bean Duke, the oboist, was
a colleague of Dr. Malin's at Lock Haven University, and is an active performer
and composer.
